iMac 2009 power Supply & HDD replacement

michaelderickson -

My Problem

Multiple problems, including a corrupted hard drive and blown capacitors on the power supply, likely due to lightning strikes.

My Fix

Great following the iFixit guides, including the power supply instructions. The help for reattaching the monitor cable by undoing the power supply, connecting the monitor, THEN re-attaching the power supply made things orders of magnitudes easer. Booted up first time after the PS & HDD replacement like a charm. Had to install Yosemite via USB drive.

I had previously bought several of your tools including the glass suction cups, the torx socket set and spudgers, so repairs were a breeze having the right tools for the job!

My Advice

Add in instructions/pictures for how to tell if the power supply is bad. In my case, 3 of the capacitors were not leaking but were simply bulging, from what i was reading on the internet that means they have failed and no longer supplying power properly. Booting without the cover confirmed this as the 4leds in the lower right corner, lit up #1, boot-up chime, 2-4 lit in sequence, screen flickered, then all went dark, including #1 led. So at that point I knew the PS was toast.
