My Problem

MacBook Pro 2010 goes bonkers. Disk Utility cannot even mount the SSD I installed two years ago. I figure it's a crappy SSD, and now I have to replace it. This is when I begin to devise plans to hurt people.

But when I pull the SSD and connect it to a different Mac, it mounts just fine, and I can read/write to it. So now what? Checking around, iFixit has an article about the hard drive cable going bad. For around $50, that's worth a shot. I reconsider the need to commit homicide.

My Fix

Repair was easy. Pull the back panel off the MacBook, pull out the old cable, put in the new one. Tighten a large number of very tiny screws (hurrah for magnetic screwdrivers!). Cross fingers, start up MacBook and......voila! Can mount and read the SSD.

At this point the SSD was wiped clean, so I had to restore OSX, but whatever. Small price to pay to get MacBook back up and running quickly and easily.

Faith in humanity restored. iFixit prevented me from undertaking some kind of vengeful rampage of hate on an SSD manufacturer and/or Apple. So thanks for keeping me out of jail.

My Advice

Standard story. Keep track of all the screws and where they go. This is a really easy repair to do yourself. Don't be afraid!
