My Advice
Increasing RAM from 8GB to 16GB on an early 2011 macbook pro (OSX Mavericks) had almost no effect for most applications I tested (3x repeat processing after fresh reboot, internet and all other applications closed). HOWEVER, the hybrid SSD which I installed subsequently had a pronounced effect -- boot-time halved, and general use in the OS even with many applications running is now faster than ever!
