What's a Pentalobe Screw? ¶

A Pentalobe screw is similar to a Torx—except that the points have a rounder shape, and it has five points instead of six. Apple’s service manuals refer to them as “Pentalobular” screws; contrary to what some folks may say, this is not a security Torx screw. Security Torx have a post in the middle. Apple would never use a real security Torx screw with a post for two reasons: they’re ugly, and the posts break off easily with screw heads this small.

Why is it in my iPhone? ¶

Pentalobe screws are unique to Apple's hardware. In the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, they are used only on the outside of the phone, and they have one clear purpose: to keep you out of your iPhone.

So, don't be fooled into thinking that you have to let Apple lock you out of your iPhone! Install these Phillips screws today, and look forward to a brighter, happier, liberated tomorrow.

My Problem

frequent glitches, frequently turned off, battery ran low quickly ( in 1-2 hrs)

My Fix

the repair went very well. the online tutorial was helpful. The tools in the iphone 4 battery replacement kit worked well. The replacement battery works fine. Charge lasts all day now.

My Advice

Yes. I ordered the iphone 4 liperation kit and the battery replacement kit, because I could not get an accurate description of the products and the online tutorial made it sound like you might need both kits if your iphone has the star headed screws. The battery replacement kit ended up having everything I needed and I spent 10 more dollars than needed for the liberation kit.

Overall - very satisfied to have a revived iphone

My Problem

speaker was not working.

My Fix

It was mostly easy. Took me about an hour to do that. I could have done it in far less time, if I didn't strip one of the screws. I was able to do the replacement by skipping some steps.

My Advice

1. The screws are very tiny. Work in a well lighted area, also use magnifier glass if possible.

2. Be careful when loosening the screws. If you strip a screw, you are screwed!

3. Keep track of each screw you open.

4. There is a tiny black triangular spacer underneath the speaker. I didn't notice it's layout, while I was taking out the speaker. I ended up leaving it out during reassembly. My phone still works fine without it. It would be nice if the instruction shows a picture of the spacer's layout.

My Problem

My sink went rogue and started shooting water up to my ceiling. I was on the phone talking through the speaker and it was on the counter so I grabbed it to save it - wet hands, dropped phone, screen went black. Hours of trying to open my phone with nails and wires and earring posts - UGG - Ifixit to the rescue.

My Fix

After I got my kit, I removed the screws and opened my phone without a hitch. Fixed my problem (thanks YouTube) and was able to reinstall the original screws - saving the extra screws for the next emergency; I wouldn't want to be in that situation again.

My Advice

Don't waste time trying to dream up solutions that already exist. Don't bother driving 30 miles and waiting for the Apple store to open. Go to ifixit.com and find your solution, order it, relax and get your solution delivered to your door. Viola! Love ifixit.com!!!

My Problem

The display broke when the phone was dropped.

My Fix

The repair went okay thanks to the guide. It took about an hour and a half.

My Advice

Follow the guide step by step and you won't have any problems.

My Problem

Iphone camera lens was blurry or scratched. It didn't take good pictures and that's a problem.

My Fix

Exchanged back panels with spare phone laying around

My Advice

Don't waste any time with anything else - just use IFixit!

My Problem

The bottom microphone would only work intermittently so I could hear people who called me but after a few seconds, they could not hear me. Eventually, it stopped working altogether.

My Fix

Ordered a new dock connector (which has the microphone attached) and smartphone repair kit and watched the video a couple of times and read the instructions a couple of times too. The battery needed some prying to get it out of the glue, and the home button ribbon cable is so tiny, it took a few tries to get it together properly. Also the main ribbon connector took some patience to get it seated properly. The whole process took about 30 minutes because I was being extremely slow and careful. SUCCESS!! It fired back up and now works perfectly. Although a bit daunting to start with, I now look back and it seems like the easiest thing to do. Great instructions - anyone can do this!

My Advice

Watch for plastic sheet tabs that have to be peeled off the new part.

Order the repair kit - it has all the tools you need and the little boxes for all the screws really help.

The home button ribbon cable is small and hard to see. It looks like it lays on top of the connector, but it actually slides into a minuscule slot on the side opposite the little pop-up clamp. Tweezers were a must.

Don't force the main ribbon cable connector back on. When it's carefully aligned it will snap into place and you'll know you got it right by the little click you'll hear.

My Problem

OEM battery at end of life

My Fix

Still happy with my iPhone4. The Liberator kit and new Battery brought it back to "right out of the box new condition". After viewing the video, the battery swap took all of 5 mins. Conditioned the battery as instructed (drain to 10% then fully charge). Getting 48 hr battery life from the new battery. My old original battery was having to be charged at least twice a day. Shazzzzzam! iFixit is the go to place for all your battery needs. Great videos too! Thanks

My Advice

Follow all instructions and you'll get there. Great products. Why buy a new iPhone when you can make yours new again for a fraction of the price.

My Problem

My daughter's iPhone 4 battery needed replacing. We searched online and found iFixit. We watched the YouTube video and I thought that between my husband and myself, we could accomplish the task. We ordered the repair kit.

My Fix

When the kit arrived, we were both busy so it sat on our dining room table for two days. We both tried to set aside the time to sit down and watch the video again and attempt the repair, but life kept getting in the way.

When I came home from work the evening of the second day, I was going to tell my daughter that I would definitely help her this weekend, but to my delight she greeted me at the door with the exciting news that she had done it herself!!!

My Advice

She watched the video and boldly dove it to attempt the repair on her own. Her success has given her a new sense of accomplishment and has increased her self-esteem! Who would have thought that all that could come out of a little box! We are delighted that we found iFixit!

My Problem

phone would go dead 3 hr after full charge

My Fix

i looked over the video i was all done in 10 min.

My Advice

dont buy the cheap used battery for less money i hate people that lie to me ! why would you want to fix it twice??

My Problem

My poor old battery would run down in 10 minutes, then recharge in 10 minutes, so I was tied to a charging cord, even in the car. The local battery store wants $40 for a new battery and another $40 to install it. Please.

My Fix

The procedure took less time than writing this is taking. I did rip the tab off the plastic sheet under the battery, but that's not a big deal. The little plastic prying tool rocks.

My Advice

Just follow the guide. Kudos to the author. It's a good idea to have something to put the little screws in while you work so they don't get lost and you can remember which one goes back in which hole. Tweezers are really helpful, especially for putting the little pressure connector back in place. You got this.
