My Problem

A friend of mine brought his 2007 MBP 15" to me and said that it just did not power on that morning. He noticed that the power button was slightly collapsed and we thought that one of his children had mashed it to death. He asked me to replace the power button and we ordered the top case from iFixit.

My Fix

The repair went well. The guide was great. I noticed a few differences in the guide that were not seen on the case. Specifically, there were no locking tabs over the keyboard and backlight ribbons, and there was no black plastic covering the keyboard of my friends top case. Everything else was the same.

There was also a small rectangular component, which I believe was part of the bluetooth system, that was on my computer, but not shown on the guide. I easily transferred this though.

The only problem I had with assembly was fitting the keyboard ribbon back into its connector. The ribbon was too flimsy to push in easily, but using a magnifier to make sure of the alignment and a spudger to gently push it, I was able to seat it in the connector.

After assembly, I pressed the power button and.....nothing. So now I am wondering if the logic board or some other device failed. I believe I assembled everything correctly, and I did not damage anything doing it.

Does anyone have a suggestion to give? There was no visible evidence of liquid or other damage to the interior components. I'm stumped.

My Advice

The repair is not difficult if you have the right tools. The spudger was very helpful so make sure you have one for this repair. The case iFixit sent was beautiful, and they included replacement plastic covers that you have to remove from your old keyboard during disassembly. Five stars to iFixit. However, I still do not know why the MBP will not fire up.
