My Mac's battery monitor had been telling me for some time I needed to replace the battery, and it was getting where a charge would last less than an hour.

My Fix

The step-by-step instructions were simple and could not have been easier to follow. To summarize, you remove the screws holding the back cover in place, disconnect the battery, remove two weird screws holding the battery down, replace the battery and put all the screws back in. Took me about five minutes, and that was with my taking extra time in case something was more complicated than it looked.

My Advice

The two screws holding down the battery have some kind of weird y-shaped slot in the head instead of the standard Phillips or Torx heads. I didn't have a driver that fit it, but was able to use a small slotted screwdriver to catch one of the Y slots and just apply lots of downward pressure to the screw head while rotating it back out. Worked fine for me.

My Problem

The symptom: Touchpad stopped clicking in.

The troubleshooting: I took the bottom off the Macbook Pro Mid 2010 and removed the battery to figure out why the touchpad wasn't working. Adjusted the click screw underneath the touchpad and put the battery back in. The touchpad wouldn't click. So I removed the battery once more. The touchpad clicked down when the battery was removed. Looked closely at the battery and noticed that it had started buldging. BAD NEWS.

My Fix

Received the battery quicker than I thought I would. Thanks iFixit for the fast shipping. I had been using the Macbook for a few days without the battery by just plugging it into power when I needed it and setting it up to hibernate when I closed the lid or pushed the power button. I removed the bottom and installed the new battery. Buttoned everything up and sure enough. The touchpad was clicky again. Booted up the Macbook and checked my battery health monitor app that I had installed months ago. The battery had more MAh than the original max MAh for that model Macbook. Causing the battery health to jump up to 106%.

My Advice

Always use OEM parts for battery replacements. Never misjudge a non-clicky touchpad on an otherwise perfectly working Macbook as just a touchpad issue. Things aren't always as they seem.

The issue was that after nearly five years of continuous use, the MacBook's lithium battery was failing and the ominous "Replace Soon" label began to appear under the battery icon.

My Fix

At first, the original battery sent didn't work out as well as expected. However, iFixit's support team quickly remedied the situation with issuing a new replacement through the same fast FedEx channel as the original one. And, the second repair was just as fast as before.

My Advice

Batteries seem to be funny things and therefore, I think it is important to thoroughly test the battery that you received to make sure it is performing optimally. The repair itself is a piece of cake, just follow the guide on the website.

I replaced batteries for my sisters before they would turn back to school and out of town. Their batteries were done and they all had to have their MacBook plugged in all the time, but not anymore! :)

The repair was very easy and it didn't take long either. There have been absolutely no problems with the new batteries and they all came well packaged. The repair was really fun and it was even more fun to see my sisters happy faces after :)

Don't forget to have a tri-wing screwdriver before you begin, there is no other way to take out the battery. And I highly suggest to not rush things and one should not be tired while repairing :)
