Meet Megalodon: The Home Repair Kit We Kept Wishing We Had

We make repair tools for a living, so when something breaks at home, we reach for our own kits. But one problem kept coming up.

You know the jobs. Clearing hair out of the vacuum but the screw is miles deep. Swapping that loose outlet and the terminal screws are crazy tight. Troubleshooting your finicky coffee maker and you need way more reach and torque than you expect. Around the house, we kept running into repairs that lived in the space between our precision kits and the power drill in the garage.

We already have strong driver kits. Our Mako Driver Kit is made for all your gadgets. The Mahi Driver Kit tackles larger tech. And now the Megalodon Driver Kit meets a different set of demands: more reach, more control, more torque, and a footprint small enough to live in a drawer instead of camping on a workbench. When asked for Megalodon’s target, Product Development Lead Brett Hartt says simply, “things you would encounter in your house.” Our perfect sweet spot.

So we built Megalodon around 16 extended-reach 2″ bits, a push-to-lock Swivel Grip Cap, and a case that fits into your day-to-day life.

We spend a lot of time helping people fix electronics, but the spirit of repair extends all through the house. Most people don’t use a giant toolbox on the daily, nor do they have the space for it. They need one kit they can trust when the dishwasher starts rattling, the vacuum needs to come apart, or the car interior starts buzzing.

That is the zone Megalodon is made for. It is small enough to live in a backpack or glove box, and substantial enough to earn its keep.

Megalodon says: You deserve more than whatever bent flathead has been rolling around in the junk drawer since 2009.

Why We Skip The Ratchet

A ratcheting driver has been on the iFixit wishlist for a long time now. But the more we talked about it, the more we realized, we don’t actually love the experience of ratcheting drivers.

It comes down to friction, in the bad sense. Ratchets add bulk. They add moving parts. They add one tiny but constant annoyance.

“Ratchets are notorious for always being in the wrong position,” Brett explains. “I always have it set on the wrong side, and when I go to twist, it just goes, click-click-click.”

Push For Power, Spin For Speed

That instinct led us to develop the Swivel Grip Cap. The driver spins freely when you want speed. When you want to bear down on the screw, push down to lock the cap. The motion is intuitive in use. It acts like a swivel driver when you want it, and a static driver when you want that, no second-guessing.

Lead product developer for the Megalodon, Andrew Goldheart, says the team started with “a lot of testing with just a smooth profile” on the clutch liners (that’s the grip mechanism) along with different materials and hardnesses. Brett says the team wanted “something that had infinite points of engagement.” The hard mechanical teeth in a typical ratchet don’t give you that. If the teeth line up poorly, they clack, collide, and feel awful. Brett demoed one early prototype that felt “like biting a fork or something.”

So how do you get a grip without that crunchy engagement of teeth? Quick prototypes aren’t enough. Andrew says, “It’s not something that you can validate through any rapid prototyping, like 3D printing. It really needs to be manufactured on the actual hard injection molding tooling, which is expensive and takes a long time to make and modify.” The smooth version worked, but “it didn’t quite hit the mark,” so the team updated the tooling and added tiny lobes that help the clutch engage and self-align.

Most people will only see a blue cap. For Brett, Andrew, and the rest of the team building it, this blue cap represents long months of prototyping, tooling changes, and endless tiny decisions to get it right. For you, we hope it means home repair that feels natural as soon as you get your hands on it.

Sixteen Bits, Chosen With Purpose

Megalodon’s case is the same size and shape as the Mako’s so they can sit alongside each other in a drawer. That also means customer mods like the latched box frame we’ve got up on Printables will work for it, too. 

We could have jammed this kit with every bit under the sun and called it value (we’re not throwing specific shade, but plenty of tool companies do exactly that). Generic bit sets promise abundance, but with our decades of experience and thousands of repair manuals, Megalodon delivers specificity without the clutter.

Instead, we hand-selected the fasteners people actually run into during household repair, furniture assembly, automotive tinkering, and general DIY. You get Phillips 0, 1, and 2; Flathead 6 mm; TR10, TR15, TR20, and TR25; Hex 4, 5, and 6 mm plus 1/8″; Square 1 and 2; a 5/16″ nut driver; and a 1/4″ socket adapter.

Megalodon’s extra length specifically matches the pain points of home repair. Often, especially on appliances, fasteners are recessed. Standard 1″ bits do fine until a fastener disappears down a deep screw well or behind a panel where the driver girth starts bonking into the plastic before the bit reaches home. Megalodon’s 2” shanks get into those screws set deep in plastic bosses.

One More Thing…

The other killer feature of Megalodon? We’ve improved the labeling of our bits.

Our tools are built to last, and that includes the labeling. In the case of our foam bit holders, the only way to keep the labels intact was to laser etch them. Every other method we tried—and boy did we try—would wear off and be even more useless than low contrast black-on-black. That is, until now.

Brett says getting the labeling to work took “probably as much work as anything else in the kit.”

Some of it was timing; foam printing has become a lot more common since we started out. But mostly it was relentless pursuit of perfection, and many, many layers of printing and testing in a bunch of different environments.

The result? A robust coating that’s oil and solvent resistant, built to handle whatever abuse it might encounter in the back of your truck. Andrew has really put it through its paces.

But we’re nothing if not scientific, so the printing will have a trial run here on Megalodon before rolling out across our entire tool line.

Andrew also built test fixtures for the project more broadly, including rigs to measure how much torque the liners can transmit and an automated cycle-testing machine that runs the driver “through as many cycles until it breaks.” The same design ethic shows up here. If a coating will rub off, smear, or fail once real hands and real grime get involved, we want to know before the tool lands in yours.

The Tool We Keep Wishing We Had At Home

Unfortunately for Megalodon, plenty of repairs stall out before the first screw even comes out. And that’s not due to driver reach, but the lack of information. Hidden instructional diagrams, paywalled documentation, or the complete lack of service manuals is a tough hurdle to leap.

A couple years back the Federal Trade Commission asked us to look into appliance repair. Along with our advocacy partners at PIRG, we found that only 7 of 50 appliance manufacturers made service manuals publicly available. 

Now the good news is, since then many Right to Repair bills passed in the US include appliances along with consumer electronics, including in Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado. But there’s still a ways to go.

Megalodon is not a law. It does not magically open closed documentation. But it is part of the same solution: repair at home should be standard. It should be universal, easy, and accessible. The modern home deserves modern tools. We’ll keep at it, and we sure hope you do, too.
