My 80 GB iPod Classic shows a red "x" in a circle and won't go into disk mode. Does that mean the hard drive is bad? It happened when I connected it to my computer and upgraded iTunes to 9. I am using Windows XP.

I thought all was lost, so I tried your "barbaric" method since I figured I had nothing to lose..... It worked! My 6 year old Ipod is working again and I am so pleased.
