Device Reparability Scores

Overview ¶

Repairability scores comprise of a 1-10 score assigned to devices.

Scoring ¶

Each device is assessed on a 100 point scale. Each score is then divided by 10 in order to arrive to the final figure.

We also have lists of smartphones and tablets that were already assessed and scored using our scale:

Phones and Tablets ¶

Add 10 points for each of the following criteria:

  • Repair information/diagrams is included with device, or freely available on the internet
  • No proprietary screws or self-destructing fasteners are present
  • Disassembling the device does not require substantial prying effort
  • Battery is easily removable (no strong adhesive, not soldered in place)
  • Discretionary feel after having taken apart the device

Add 5 points for each of the following criteria:

  • Components are not tightly packed together, making disassembly easy
  • LCD panel and display glass are two separate components (not fused together)
  • Excessive amounts of adhesive are not used to secure internal components
  • Full device disassembly takes less than half an hour
  • Disassembling the device does not require a heating element
  • Fewer than three different types of screws are used, reducing tool cost
  • Use of fragile ribbon cables used (that may easily tear) is minimized
  • Number of screws totals less than 30
  • Internal components are modular, and are not grouped together on one cable
  • Critical components (screen and battery) are easily replaceable

Computers ¶

Add 10 points for each of the following criteria:

  • Repair information/diagrams is included with device, or freely available on the internet
  • No proprietary screws or self-destructing fasteners are present
  • Battery is easily removable (no strong adhesive, not soldered in place)
  • Opening the outer case does not require substantial prying effort
  • RAM is upgradable
  • Storage drive is upgradable
  • Discretionary feel after having taken apart the device

Add 5 points for each of the following criteria:

  • Fewer than three different types of screws are used, reducing tool cost
  • Use of fragile ribbon cables used (that may easily tear) is minimized
  • Components are not tightly packed together, making disassembly easy
  • Excessive amounts of adhesive are not used to secure internal components
  • Full device disassembly takes less than an hour
  • LCD panel and display glass are two separate components (for all-in-one machines)

Other Devices ¶

Other types of devices may have different features that prevent them from being scored using one of the two lists above. We'd love to get input on which other types of devices should have repairability scoring sheets, and what kind of metrics you think should be part of each scoring sheet!
