What you need

  1. Sony SRS-XB40 Battery Replacement, Speaker Assembly Replacement: step 1, image 1 of 1
    • Remove the speaker case from the outer casing by prying it from the base of the speaker using a metal spudger.

  2. Sony SRS-XB40 Battery Replacement: step 2, image 1 of 1
    • Remove the four T-8 screws (15 mm long) from the black speaker face.

  3. Sony SRS-XB40 Battery Replacement: step 3, image 1 of 1
    • Pry the two rubber end pieces loose enough to pry off two pieces of the long plastic casing from the speaker body using a metal spudger.

  4. Sony SRS-XB40 Battery Replacement: step 4, image 1 of 1
    • Pry the two remaining rubber pieces of the casing completely away from the body of the speaker with the same metal pry tool.

  5. Sony SRS-XB40 Battery Replacement: step 5, image 1 of 2 Sony SRS-XB40 Battery Replacement: step 5, image 2 of 2
    • Once you have removed the outer blue casing, four T-8 screws (15 mm long) will be revealed on each corner. After removing these screws, simply pull the top part of the speaker way from the body to get the the inner part of the speaker.

  6. Sony SRS-XB40 Battery Replacement: step 6, image 1 of 1
    • Once you have gotten to the internal parts of the speaker, there are seven wires connecting the speaker plate to the body of the speaker. Pinch the release tabs at the top of each of the four main wires to remove them.

    • Simply pull the thin wires on each side to remove them from their attachment points.

    • Remove the final red and black wire by gently pulling it apart.

    • This will ultimately detach the speaker plate from the base.

    • Unscrew the PH1 screw at the top of the speaker.

Step 8 picture shows a small green pcb component, in my black model i nearly damaged this when sliding the white frame/main pcb out from the hard shell. The small component above is attached to the main board and to prevent damage i would suggest prising up/ apart the shell a few mm to get the pins out from the connector between them. Or risk bending the pins like i did or risk breaking the component. Great care needed to return these parts to their normal position when reassembling the unit. However the poc here shows there may have been a prior attemt to take it apart as i can see the green component has already been removed

Edit, its actually easier to remove the component first (prise it up from its adhesive backing very careful not to snap it as its a very thin peice of pcb here) before sliding out the white frame/main board, and it is far easier to ad last on the rebuild than trying to slide the main frame back in as lining up the pins is very difficult.

I just twisted this component before noticing the comments.. the connector inside flew off when I was rather gently pulling the white frame out. The pins are tiny and I might be able to solder them back (doesn’t look like any traces were ripped), but come on!!!

    • Unplug the wire that connects the battery to the motherboard.

    • To remove the battery, peel away the tape that holds the battery in place.

Hello would you please include a picture of the side of the battery that has all the technical information such as model number, voltage and mha ratings.. Also a source to purchase would be appreciated thanks..

I cant seem to find a replacement anywhere, and the details are specific enough to see but i dont know how to get a replacement battery. Mine is at fault and wont seem to recharge to enough power to run. Shortly after initial start up and BT light flashes white then all lights go orange/charge mode then shuts off

Seems to be a thing for this speaker. It's why they hurried up and came out with newer versions of it. Sad really.

I’ve been following these steps to replace the battery in my Sony SRS-XB40. I’ve used the speaker for 4 years and now the battery doesn’t charge - the speaker turns on momentarily when connected to a power source but turns off after a few seconds. Speaker does not turn on at all when powered by the battery.

I have found two versions of the replacement battery, both are identical and are designed for use in the Sony SRS-XB40 but one has a larger capacity (for around £8 more than the standard battery).

Here is the link to the standard 5400mAh battery replacement (£32.84):

This is full of $@$*. You dont even tell or show where to get the battery for this device also I fix it is also full of $@$* when it comes to telling the public where to also find the battery. Like it's this top secret place to find the exact battery. Bottom line fullnofnshit

They will not answer. They know better and know I am correct about them not answering to the public demands. Very dumb if you ask me. I'm sitting here trying to find this %#*@ thing to no success. Sony is dumb as well for selling such an expensive speaker for it to mess up after a year I owned it. Pathetic

Hey there! iFixit is a community-based platform for people to share information. Unfortunately, we at iFixit don't have all the answers, but anyone that knows how to fix things or where to source parts is welcome to share that knowledge. In this specific instance, it looks like replacement batteries aren't available for this device. However, if this information changes, anyone is welcome to update the guide with a link to the part. I hope this helps!
