What you need

    • Carefully look over the mask and find the damaged area.

    • Make sure the mask is clean, dry, and dusted before you start the repair.

    • Take a moment and try to understand the full damage of the mask, this will help you approach the repair more properly.

    • Cut papier-mâché strips long enough to fully cover the damaged area and gap.

    • Prepare at least two or three strips beforehand so you can work quickly.

    • Cutting the strips beforehand will keep the process more clean and controlled.

    • Once that piece is cut, dip it into hot water until the piece is fully wet.

    • Let it soak until it becomes fully saturated.

    • Then take it the piece out of the water and be ready to place it on the damaged area.

    • The strip should feel soft, but workable before using it.

    • Lay the now damp strip across the gap.

    • Press it into place, and make sure it bridges the whole gap.

    • Smooth the strip with your fingers to blend it into the mask’s surface.

    • Make sure to take your time here, this first layer is what creates the foundation of the repair, and overall shape of the mask in that area.

    • Repeat the process with two or three more strips.

    • Layer them over the damaged area to create the thickness and strength of the repair.

    • Press/shape the layers so they follow the original shape of the mask before it was damaged.

    • Smooth any bumps or raised edges to help create a more seamless repair

    • You’re essentially rebuilding the mask, so make sure it feels solid and even.

    • Let the repaired area dry for at least 10–12 hours.

    • Once fully dry, apply the acrylic paint with the accompanying brush, and use them to blend the repaired section into the mask.

    • Wait for the paint dry for at least 3–5 hours.

    • Once dry and painted, your mask should feel fully ready to use again!
