Introduction
Papier mâché masks sometimes crack or split due to wear and tear. This guide will show you how to repair a break or crack in a papier mâché mask by reinforcing the damaged area with more of the same material and allowing it to dry. Before you begin, make sure your mask is clean and dry, and work on a flat surface.
Note: Your scissors must be sharp, and use them with caution.
What you need
-
-
Carefully look over the mask and find the damaged area.
-
Make sure the mask is clean, dry, and dusted before you start the repair.
-
Take a moment and try to understand the full damage of the mask, this will help you approach the repair more properly.
-
-
-
-
Lay the now damp strip across the gap.
-
Press it into place, and make sure it bridges the whole gap.
-
Smooth the strip with your fingers to blend it into the mask’s surface.
-
Make sure to take your time here, this first layer is what creates the foundation of the repair, and overall shape of the mask in that area.
-
-
-
Repeat the process with two or three more strips.
-
Layer them over the damaged area to create the thickness and strength of the repair.
-
Press/shape the layers so they follow the original shape of the mask before it was damaged.
-
Smooth any bumps or raised edges to help create a more seamless repair
-
You’re essentially rebuilding the mask, so make sure it feels solid and even.
-
-
-
Let the repaired area dry for at least 10–12 hours.
-
Once fully dry, apply the acrylic paint with the accompanying brush, and use them to blend the repaired section into the mask.
-
Wait for the paint dry for at least 3–5 hours.
-
Once dry and painted, your mask should feel fully ready to use again!
