Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 4th Gen Mouse Pad Replacement

Introduction

If your Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 4th Generation doesn’t allow the user to navigate the screen with the mousepad or click on items on the screen, use this guide to replace the mousepad (also known as a trackpad).

The mousepad uses a ribbon cable to send the information to the motherboard. A loose ribbon cable connection will cause the same issues like a broken mousepad.

Before using this guide, inspect the ribbon cable connection for a loose or non-existent connection, which has the possibility of making the mousepad dysfunctional. Be sure to fully reassemble the computer before testing the mousepad.

Before beginning, make sure to power off your computer completely and disconnect from any external power source.

Step 1 Bottom Panel

Unscrew the nine captive screws on the bottom cover of the laptop using a Phillips #1 screwdriver.
The screws do not fully come out of the back cover, so there is no need for screw management.
There are a few small clips around the edge that you may need to pry at to free them. An opening pick may be helpful for this process.

Lift the back cover up and off of the computer.

Carefully unplug the speaker connector by pulling it towards you.

Remove the two 5 mm screws on each speaker with a Phillips #1 screwdriver.

Unweave the blue and white wires from underneath the plastic tabs connected to the battery.

Lift each speaker up and out from the computer.

Carefully lift the far end of the battery connector with an opening tool facing towards you.
Remove the connector by pushing it forward and lifting.

Remove the central 5 mm screw with a Phillips #1 screwdriver.

Lift the battery up and out of the computer.

Step 10 Mouse Pad

Using a Phillips #1 screwdriver, remove the six 2 mm screws securing the mousepad to the motherboard.
Using the plastic opening tool, lift the flap of the ZIF connector up and pull out the ribbon cable connecting the motherboard to the mousepad.

Using the plastic opening tool, tilt and lift the mousepad away from the bottom of the computer.
Remove the mousepad.
If the mousepad is being fussy, you can also push it out from the keyboard side of the bottom panel.
