Introduction

You may need to use recovery mode to restore your device in the following situations:

  • You forgot your passcode
  • If your screen is stuck on the Apple logo for several minutes with no progress bar.
  • You see the recovery mode screen(Jump to Step 2)

Note: If you forgot your passcode, you will have to erase the device.

  1. If you have an iPhone 8 or later, Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
    • If you have an iPhone 8 or later, Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.

    • For an iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPod touch (7th generation): Press and hold both the Side (or Top) button and the Volume Down button until you see the Apple Logo Screen.

    • On iPhone 6s or earlier: Press and hold both the Side (or Top) button and the Home button until you see the Apple logo.

  2. Instructions for macOS(Catalina and later): Open Finder. Follow Step 1, and then plug your device into your computer. In the sidebar, you will see your device. Click on it, and a popup will appear. Click update to update your phone without erasing data. Click restore if you have forgotten your passcode. This will reset the phone. Instructions for macOS(Mojave and earlier) and Windows: Connect your device to your PC. Open iTunes, and click the iPhone icon near the top left of iTunes. A popup will appear. Press OK. Click update to update your phone without erasing data. Click restore iPhone if you have forgotten your passcode. This will reset the phone.
    • Instructions for macOS(Catalina and later): Open Finder. Follow Step 1, and then plug your device into your computer. In the sidebar, you will see your device.
