Introduction

Use this guide to restring any guitar with a Floyd Rose Bride, without compromising the action of your guitar. The guitar that I am using is my very own Jackson King V.

Before you begin, check what tuning your guitar is in because you want to make sure that you end up with the same tuning on all strings after finishing the restringing process. Also, you’ll need to match the previous gauge of the strings to your new ones, so it is important that the restringing is done with strings of the same gauge to avoid the bridge from loosing its position.

For step 3, I used a 9V battery to maintain the Bridge action. However, you can use any object that is almost close to the size and dimensions of a 9V battery.

  1. Unlock the double locking screws under the headstock using the hex key.

  2. Tip the Floyd Rose Bridge forward by pushing down on the tremolo (whammy bar). Tip the Floyd Rose Bridge forward by pushing down on the tremolo (whammy bar).

  3. Place a 9V battery (or similarly shaped object) in to the cut-out space under the bridge to hold the bridge steady. When the 9V battery is in its place, you can now let go of the tremolo (whammy bar) and the bridge will stay steady for the process.

  4. Unwind the old strings using the string winder.

  5. Loosen up the pegs that are below the fine tuners using the hex key, rotating counter-clockwise. Gently pull the strings out of the block openings.

  7. Tighten up the pegs below the fine tuners using the hex key, rotating clockwise this time.

  8. Feed each string in through the tuners on the headstock. Feed each string in through the tuners on the headstock.

  9. Tune each string one at a time. Cut the extra end of the strings after tuning using the wire cutter. Finally, lock the double locking screws back using the hex key.
