Introduction

This guide was created to instruct the steps needed to refinish furniture. So many people throw away old used furniture because they cannot determine what to do with it in the condition that it may be in. A few small easy steps can turn an old piece of furniture into something new and usable.

When refinishing furniture always practice safety and wear your goggles, gloves, and mask when working with chemicals or sanding wood. Also, make sure you're in a well-ventilated area or outside.

Before altering any furniture be sure that it is not a unique designer or valuable antique. Refinishing might end up destroying the value of the furniture.

Remove all hardware from the furniture.

Next you will need to wash any grease or contaminations before sanding.
Washing your furniture prior to sanding will prevent dirt, grease, and contaminations from being sanded into the surface of the furniture.

After the surface is dry begin sanding.
Remember to only sand with the grain so the sanding scratches will blend in with the grain.

Spray or paint on your primer prior to painting.
Remember if using spray paint to apply in a sweeping motion.

After allowing primer to dry approximately 3 hours apply paint. Allow paint 24 hours to dry.
If you are able to see the primer mixed in the paint, you may need to apply second coat of paint if needed.
