Introduction

Replacement of the motherboard for the HP Pavilion 15-ab165us.

  1. Flip computer to the underside. Slide left tab inward to disengage battery lock.
    • Flip computer to the underside.

    • Slide left tab inward to disengage battery lock.

  2. Slide the left tab inward to eject the battery. Slide the left tab inward to eject the battery.
    • Slide the left tab inward to eject the battery.

  3. Remove the 8mm screws underneath with a Phillips #1 screwdriver. Use a plastic opening tool to remove the plastic feet. Use a plastic opening tool to remove the plastic feet.
    • Remove the 8mm screws underneath with a Phillips #1 screwdriver.

    • Use a plastic opening tool to remove the plastic feet.

  4. Remove plastic tabs a with metal spudger. Remove plastic tabs a with metal spudger. Remove plastic tabs a with metal spudger.
    • Remove plastic tabs a with metal spudger.

  5. Remove the 8mm screws that hold the bottom cover with a Phillips #1 screwdriver.
    • Remove the 8mm screws that hold the bottom cover with a Phillips #1 screwdriver.

  6. Pull the Optical Drive out.
    • Pull the Optical Drive out.

  7. Remove the 3mm screws that were hidden under the Optical Drive with a Phillips #00 screwdriver.
    • Remove the 3mm screws that were hidden under the Optical Drive with a Phillips #00 screwdriver.

  8. Flip the computer back over. Use a plastic opening tool to release the clips holding the keyboard section in place.
    • Flip the computer back over.

    • Use a plastic opening tool to release the clips holding the keyboard section in place.

  10. Close the lid and pull the screen and keyboard section up and away from the bottom cover.
    • Close the lid and pull the screen and keyboard section up and away from the bottom cover.

    • The hard drive is NOT screwed into place on the underside of the keyboard section.

  11. Locate the motherboard.
    • Locate the motherboard.

  12. Disconnect the wire connected to the Wifi card. Disconnect the wire connected to the Wifi card.
    • Disconnect the wire connected to the Wifi card.

  13. Disconnect the speakers.
    • Disconnect the speakers.

  14. Unlock and disconnect cables attached to the motherboard that connect to the display. Unlock and disconnect cables attached to the motherboard that connect to the display. Unlock and disconnect cables attached to the motherboard that connect to the display.
    • Unlock and disconnect cables attached to the motherboard that connect to the display.

  15. Unlock and remove the cable connected to the optical drive. Unlock and remove the cable connected to the optical drive.
    • Unlock and remove the cable connected to the optical drive.

  16. Unlock and remove the cable that connects to the hard drive. Unlock and remove the cable that connects to the hard drive.
    • Unlock and remove the cable that connects to the hard drive.

  17. Unlock and remove the cables connected to the keyboard. Unlock and remove the cables connected to the keyboard. Unlock and remove the cables connected to the keyboard.
    • Unlock and remove the cables connected to the keyboard.

  18. Remove the 4mm screws holding the motherboard in place with a Phillips #1 screwdriver.
    • Remove the 4mm screws holding the motherboard in place with a Phillips #1 screwdriver.

  19. Remove the 4mm screws holding the motherboard in place with a Phillips #1 screwdriver.
    • Remove the 4mm screws holding the motherboard in place with a Phillips #1 screwdriver.

  20. Disconnect the fan pins. Lift up to remove the fan.
    • Disconnect the fan pins.

    • Lift up to remove the fan.

  21. Release motherboard from the clip at the base of the hard drive.
    • Release motherboard from the clip at the base of the hard drive.

  22. Lift the motherboard up and flip it around to reveal the cable connected on the underside. Lift the motherboard up and flip it around to reveal the cable connected on the underside.
    • Lift the motherboard up and flip it around to reveal the cable connected on the underside.

  23. Unlock and disconnect the cable connected to the underside of the motherboard. Pull the motherboard out of the chassis.
    • Unlock and disconnect the cable connected to the underside of the motherboard.

    • Pull the motherboard out of the chassis.
