Disassembling Sony Xperia J (st26a) full tear down

What you need

  1. Disassembling Sony Xperia J (st26a) full tear down, Removing screws: step 1, image 1 of 1
    • Start with four screws on the backside at the corners. Funny enough the screw located on the opposite corner to the camera is completely different . Nevertheless they all use a torx T5.

    • Two torx T5 screws with smaller threads located one near the battery connectors and one near beside the speaker grill. Theres also another skill under the rubber cover beside the microSD card

  2. Disassembling Sony Xperia J (st26a) full tear down, Plastic accents: step 2, image 1 of 1
    • Take off the two plastic pieces on the top and the long one at the bottom edge on the device. Clips hold these pieces in lightly, you can take them off with your fingernail or use a thin tool to get into the very fine wedges and pop it up lightly.

    • There is another screw under the top left plastic cover. The picture shows the pieces taken off.

  3. Disassembling Sony Xperia J (st26a) full tear down, Lifting away the housing: step 3, image 1 of 2 Disassembling Sony Xperia J (st26a) full tear down, Lifting away the housing: step 3, image 2 of 2
    • The silver housing on the sides should be giving away. I started at the bottom of the device and used my finger to try around the device and slowly lift away the clips. Be gentle as this housing is very delicate. No connectors are attached; although make sure you don’t pull away some wire running along the right side of the device. Force required.

    • I lifted up the motherboard up with the ifixit pry tool here. No much force was needed, it pops up easily. I disconnected both the button-like wire connectors the runs down the side of the device.

  4. Disassembling Sony Xperia J (st26a) full tear down, Sticker peel: step 4, image 1 of 2 Disassembling Sony Xperia J (st26a) full tear down, Sticker peel: step 4, image 2 of 2
    • The next part I remove is the sticker. On the underside of it is some flex cables so be careful peeling it away to not jerk the cables. I lifted up the mother board with my hand to elevate the sticker, and pulled the sticker away from the top right corner slowly a small bit at first

    • With the tweezers and now using my hand to hold the cable in place with my finger as I further pulled it away with the tweezers. Give this process a lot of time and use your best judgment. The ribbon did get slightly peeled away from the back plate but doesn't seem to be a problem.

    • You might have noticed I removed the thermal pad. It wasnt needed in the end.

  5. Disassembling Sony Xperia J (st26a) full tear down, Flex connectors: step 5, image 1 of 1
    • This part is potentially dangerous. I removed the right side flex cable by putting my pry tool alogn the end length of the cable -pushing up close to the base of the connector. I think the connector is held on by adhesive to the yellow film between the connectors.

    • I don't understand this connector that well. After that you can fold over the board towards the left. I might not have done this the proper way. You've been warned.

    • For reassembly I lowered the logic board onto the plate with the connector.

  6. Disassembling Sony Xperia J (st26a) full tear down, Nothing sensible to be done.: step 6, image 1 of 1
    • I didn’t see a need to go further. The modules are all glued and soldered in, Doesn't make sense to remove the chips and heat sinks, and there’s no way to get at the screen as it is attached to the plate securely.

    • I reassembled and it booted! Do the process in reverse, no explanation needed.

Conclusion

Not the most gracefully done but at least it serves as a reference~
