Dell Chromebook 3100 non-touch Top Cover Replacement

What you need

    • First, open the Chromebook with the LCD facing you. This will give you access the Bezel screws.

    • Remove the 4 bezel screws located in each corner. You can use a Phillips #0 screwdriver.

    • Separate the bezel frame from the top cover using a plastic blade or any of your favorite pry tools.

    • Note* Be careful along the bottom of the bezel as you will notice the most adhesive in this area. You want to try and preserve as much black tape as possible that is covering the bottom of the LCD screen.

    • Remove the 4 LCD Screws located in each corner with a Phillips #0 screwdriver.

    • Lift the LCD out from the top cover and flip it over to access the LCD 30-pin connection.

    • Disconnect the LCD 30-pin connection located on the back of the LCD.

    • Note* Be careful peeling the tap away from the LCD cable connection. You will need to reuse this tape when reinstalling the LCD into the new top cover.

    • Turn the chromebook over in order to gain access to the back cover screws. This will get you ready for the next step.

    • Remove the 9 screws from the back cover with the Phillips #0 screwdriver. NOTE* You do not need to remove the screws completely as you just need to loosen them enough to remove the cover.

    • Once all 9 screws have been loosened, you can start to pry apart the back cover with your metal or plastic blade. I like to start from the top right hinge area. (See pic)

    • Remove the 6 hinge screws with a Phillips #0 screwdriver.

    • After removing the screws, lift the palmrest upward just enough to help raise both metal hinges in an upright position. This will help when it's time to separate the entire palmrest from the top cover in a later step.

    • Remove 1 screw from the WiFi Brace.

    • Disconnect the black and white WiFi wires

    • Remove 1 screw from the LCD connection brace.

    • Disconnect the LCD cable connection from the motherboard.

    • Separate the palmrest portion of the chromebook from the top cover which is lying underneath. This will help prepare for the next step.

    • Remove the 2 screws located at the bottom of each metal hinge.

    • Remove the middle screw located in the middle of each hinge.

    • Lift and remove both the left and right metal hinges out from the top cover.

    • Remove the camera from the middle of the top cover along with the LCD cable. You can keep the camera connected to the cable as it is much easier to do so.

    • Swap out your old chromebook top cover with a new top cover and prepare for the next steps. This guide is for those top covers that only include the black and white WiFi wires.

    • Realign the left and right metal hinge within the top cover.

    • Reinstall 1 screw in the middle of each metal hinge.

    • Reinstall 2 screws in the bottom corner of each metal hinge.

    • First, reinstall the camera in the middle of the top cover.

    • Then reroute the cable down to the bottom left corner hinge.

    • First, connect the LCD cable connector to the back of the LCD . If there is any preexisting connection tape to replace, go ahead and reapply.

    • Second, insert the LCD back into the top cover until it is flush and aligned properly.

    • Note* You will find some new adhesive strips located on the camera/LCD cable located in the bottom left corner hinge area. These little adhesive tabs can be used to help keep the cable flush against the top cover.

    • Reconnect the palmrest portion of the chromebook to the top cover. This will prepare you for the next step.

    • Reinstall the 6 hinge screws located in each top corner.

    • Reconnect the black and white WiFi wires.

    • Reinstall the Wifi wire brace.

    • Reconnect the LCD cable connection to the motherboard.

    • Reinstall the LCD connection brace.

    • Reinstall the bottom cover and tighten all 9 screws.

    • Once the bottom cover is reinstalled, flip the chromebook over and open it with the LCD facing you. This will prepare you for the next and final step.

    • First, make sure you have the LCD cables routed properly in the bottom left hinge area so the LCD bezel can connect properly.

    • Second, you can realign the bezel starting with the two bottom hinge covers. Then you can continue to "snap" the bezel into place by working around the entire bezel frame.

Conclusion

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.

the replacement of the entire top housing seems unnecessary as it appears that you could just drop in a new screen making it much much more comprehensive of a repair guide

Gavin, this guide is for replacing a damaged "Top Cover" only and isn't meant to be a guide for replacing the LCD screen. Therefore, it is showing the process of how to remove everything from the damaged top cover such as the wifi wires, LCD cable, camera, and LCD screen so that you can reuse all of these same parts within the new top cover replacement.
