Introduction
Has your garden shredder lost efficiency? The condition of its helical blade may be the cause.
This blade is no longer available as a spare part. You must therefore take care of it, and a refurbishment or sharpening can make your shredder perform like new again.
Follow this guide to disassemble the helical blade from your shredder.
What you need
-
-
-
The casing cover is secured by six 4 x 25 mm T20 Torx screws. Three screws under the left side and three screws under the right side.
-
Using a screwdriver with a T20 Torx driver bit, remove the six screws securing the casing cover.
-
Remove the casing cover by lifting it up.
-
-
-
Remove the two 4 x 20 mm Torx screws located on the left side of the plate.
-
Also remove the two 4 x 20 mm Torx screws located on the right side of the plate.
-
Unclip the top part of the plate by pressing slightly inward with your thumb while pulling it towards you. Perform this operation for both sides.
-
-
-
Using a plastic opening tool, pry each of the two sides of the switch plate away from the earcup at the bottom screw.
-
Move the switch plate out of the way by about 12 inches (30 cm) by pulling it gently toward you. It is held by two electrical connections.
-
Disconnect the ground wire by pulling on it at the back of the power socket.
-
Disconnect the connector by pulling firmly while wiggling the male end from left to right. It is not held by any snap fits, but features four flat lugs.
-
The switch plate is removed.
-
-
-
-
-
Using a 10 mm wrench or socket, remove the 4 M6 x 45mm hex frame screws (two screws on each side)
-
-
-
Remove the four 4 x 25 mm T20 screws on the front of the housing.
-
Remove the three 4 x 25 mm T20 screws located between the motor and the grounds outlet.
-
Remove the 5 x 16 mm T25 screw.
-
Remove the six 4 x 25 mm T20 screws located on the bottom and back of the housing.
-
Lift and remove the left half-housing.
-
-
-
-
Using a 5 mm hex (Allen) wrench, remove the four M6 x 25 mm socket head screws from the bearing flange.
-
Pull on the flange while moving it slightly (it comes off easily) and remove it.
-
-
-
Remove the plant material input hopper (if it did not come off with the bearing flange).
-
-
-
Remove the cutting ring (cup) by pulling it toward you.
-
For reassembly, note the notch on the ring, which must be placed into the slot on the bearing flange.
-
-
-
Let's take advantage of this disassembly to check the condition of the bearing.
-
The inner race of the bearing must rotate easily, without any stiff points, and must not have any mechanical play.
-
Clean the visible face of the bearing with a cloth, without using any product. The bearing is water resistant and is lubricated for life.
-
-
-
Place the motor/grinding chamber assembly vertically on blocks, with the motor cooling fan facing upward (so that it does not rest on the protruding blade shaft or damage the motor cooling fan).
-
Using a 5 mm hex (Allen) wrench, remove the three M6 x 25 mm socket head cap screws securing the motor.
-
-
-
Lift the motor and gently set it down on its cooling fan (be careful not to damage the cooling fan).
-
-
-
Remove the retaining ring from both planetary gears using two flathead screwdrivers. Insert the screwdrivers into the two notches of each retaining ring and turn them inward.
-
Lift the two gears and place them on a clean surface.
-
You can now check the condition of the bearings and the gear teeth, as well as the teeth of the motor pinion and the ring gear.
-
-
-
-
-
Using external snap ring pliers, spread the two ends of the snap ring and remove it from the shaft from above.
-
Remove the helical blade from its bearing from below.
-
-
-
The blade is associated with a part called a scraper, which is held in place by a large 42 mm circlip. Just like the blade, this part is no longer available as a replacement part.
-
For reassembly, ensure that no foreign bodies (iron filings, sand, dirt, dust, etc.) are present on the shafts, in the bearings, or in the gearbox with the gears. Remove the old grease from the bearings and gear teeth. Replace it with a generous application on all gear teeth.
-
The mechanical longevity of your shredder depends directly on the quality of the grease and the quality of the lubrication.
-
-
To reassemble your device, follow the instructions in reverse order.
