Introduction

Your device must be switched-on, connected to the internet and it must have installed Google account.

From Android Device manager you can:

- Find the device on the map

- Change the Lock Screen (pass the Password, PIN, Pattern Lock)

- Factory / Hard reset (!!! THIS WILL ERASE YOUR DATA!!!)

If your device is connected to the internet and you have an installed Google account on it, look at this manual.

Is there a way to do this if your phone already has a NUMBER pin code on it? What if you left your phone somewhere that someone is that already knows your current password, so you want to change it? Because I just tried this but got a msg stating that a pin was already set on the phone so no need to use NEW pin I was trying to apply. Any help other than reset please? Thnx

Complain loudly to Google about the following message from ADM after trying to over-ride the screen lock with a password: "Since Google has verified that a screen lock is already set, the password you entered won't be needed." THAT'S THE WHOLE F@)_#$) POINT -- You don't know the password and ADM won't let you enter another one to unlock the screen.

Trent Lucas - Reply

If you forgot your pattern lock or screen password, ADM will replace it with a new, entered from the customer. You don't need to know the password.

ADM is not replacing the password. It keeps saying "Since Google has verified that a screen lock is already set, the password you entered won't be needed.".

My nephew forgot his password and we couldn't use ADM to reset it. In fact, I set a password on my Moto X to try and reset it from ADM, it says the same thing and won't reset it.

sodapop jam - Reply

ADM won't remove the password. Instead, it will generate a tmp password and you can use it to unlock the phone. Then you need to set a few passcode for the phone. The tutorial has detailed explanation on this issue: http://bit.ly/28SHO3G

kersonzine -

Had this same issue, it seems Google have changed the way ADM works, which sucks. If it's a Samsung and you registered it with their findmymobile.samsung.com service you can unlock the phone remotely a lot easier than ADM.

Except it does not work any more. One would get

"Since Google has verified that a screen lock is already set, the password you entered won't be needed."

Worse, the alternative code insisted that I enter a alphabet character, but the logic screen only allow me to enter numbers. I am stuck now with the screen telling me I have to wait for an hour before I can retry.

bushiname - Reply

Except it does not work anymore. Now it shows me

"Since Google has verified that a screen lock is already set, the password you entered won't be needed."

Worse, when I set up my alternative password to my fingerprint, I was asked to include a letter in it. Only to find, after reboot, the device will only allow me to enter numbers. Also, it will start to ask me to wait half a minute, then a minute, 5 minute, half an hour, now I am waiting for an hour.

All this is in the latest version I stupidly upgraded yesterday!

bushiname - Reply

I can't reset my lock password either. This app seems pretty useless.

kellyanne67 -

Since Google has verified that a screen lock is already set, the password you entered won't be needed.

I also had this problem, and yes it required an Alpha-Numeric password when set up initially, and now only accepts a Numeric one once rebooted. Google and Samsung device managers will not work since I must not have enabled "Remote Control". I've been spending 24 hours on this problem with no solution in site other than losing everything. Now I'll try Verizon's trouble shooting.

LARGE GOOGLE \ ANDROID FAILURE!!!!!!! AND INCREASING BY THE DAY. . .

1. What happened? YouTube app says you have to go to the PlayStore to update the application to use.

2. Updated the application which launches you into the Android Application Manager. All is fine.

3. Next day...turning on the phone yields a request for a password never put in place....see previous posts.

4. We use the App Manager and follow the directions.

5. Temporary passwords don't work...up to 14 times!!!!

6. Now each time you try....you must wait....ONE HOUR....before you can try again. OF COURSE you've been writing the passwords down to insure your not the 1 screwing up. Visited all the lovely websites 4 help...no luck.

7. The AAM may work for some, but not all....

8. KICKER...I'm a parent with 2 under age kids. 6 hours later, NO ACCESS. I WORK. NEED? Emergencies, Immediate Access, etc.

THIS IS BAD FOR GOOGLE....HOPE SOMEONE REVIEWS....NOTICED 5000+ HITS ON THIS TOPIC.. just this page... IN THE LAST 30 DAYS!

bob williams - Reply

JUST TRIED AGAIN to use the Android Application Manager to unlock my phone......1 hour later again.....wrote the temporary password done on a big white board behind me.....still didn't work.

MY GUESS.....Google knows about the problem but may be stuck in corporate politics trying to figure how to "un stick" so many users who've fallen prey to the application manager. OUR BAD...of course.......GOOGLE...finally! Welcome to corporate politics and inertia....

One other thing......and one other NAFARIOUS consideration.....NOW WE KNOW THAT GOOGLE'S ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEM HAS THE ABILITY TO SHUT DOWN YOUR PHONE! Our inconvenience....of course...hours, days.....PERHAPS WHEN IT LIKES....OR....WHEN "THEY" LIKE....AND NOTHING YOU OR I CAN DO ABOUT IT....KINDA SOUNDS LIKE THE OVER REACH EVERYONE WAS CONCERNED ABOUT WITH......you know......MICROSOFT!!!! WHAT DO YOU THINK???

So I really wish I could have read some of the comments before I did what they told me to do which is try it before something actually happens and I'm ending up with the same problem everybody else is it won't unlock I put in every password I can possibly think of and it's not working I think I'm going to make a comment to Google about this this is just outrageous it's irritating been working on this since 4 o'clock today I can't believe I will never do no stupid stuff like that again obviously if you lose your phone what are the chances that you're going to get it back probably not . I don't like the fact that I have to pay $ for something that I can't even use that ridiculous I have the Samsung tablet 8 inch that I have to pay for this really really sucks we need to go viral

I locked my phone through Android Device Manager and found it the next day. I can't unlock it with the password or I remember it wrong. The kicker is I can't reset it through Android Device Manager either. So, is my only option to rest the device? All the data would be lost!
