Upgrade HDD model to SSD

Hi,

I have the Mid 2011 Server model mac mini (Quad-core i7-2635QM) however I need to connect 3 monitors so I have picked up a mid level Mac Mini 2014 model with the HDD as it has 2 thunderbolt ports and a HDMI.

I'm looking to upgrade to an SSD - what's the best route? A 2.5" SSD drive using SATA in direct replacement of the existing HDD which I have done in the 2011 model or should I look at finding an SSD for the second apple proprietary slot? I understand whilst possible this is a bit more involved due to needing the cable and special apple SSD. Is there a noticeable difference in real world performance over the 2 options?

Drive capacity isn't an issue as nothing is really stored on the device.

Any help would really be appreciated.

There is not a cable for the "Apple" SSD, rather a slot, if storage is not an issue the purchasing this would be the easy and quick fix.

Hold that thought! If your system didn't come with a SSD you'll need to get a new mid frame to gain the PCIe slot for the blade SSD.

While the Apple blade SSD is harder to find and more costly, It does offer faster I/O than the SATA III interface. If you can swing it I would go for it!

So far there is no third party options other than Apple for their custom SSD.

Thanks all, so to be clear I need the following for the SSD Blade which appears to be the best option:

1 x 076-00040 - cable

1 x Apple SSD (Any?)

You'll need the custom Apple PCIe x2 or x4 SSD. They are expensive and hard to track down in the larger sizes.

The other option is to swap out your 2.5" SATA HD for the 2.5" SATA SSD.
