Not booting - black screen, no drive spin-up

Hi folks,

Having a bit of trouble with a white MacBook Core 2 Duo belonging to my son. I'm looking for diagnosis and have read much of whats been posted here but before I get into buying replacement parts I wanted as clear a picture as possible as to what may be the cause.

The device is not booting up - screen is blank and there does not appear to be any life from the hard drive (no sound of the drive spinning up, etc.). I have tried booting from the original system disc - no joy, the machine keeps chiming after attempting (I assume to read the disc). I have taken the upper case containing the keyboard and trackpad out, and looked for signs of spillage and corrosion - none apparent. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the hard disc power connector and the display connector - no change.

I am thinking that this is probably a logic board issue, but would welcome any other suggestions coming my way.

Thanks,

John

Here's how I would handle it. Connect everything to the logic board, EXCEPT the hard drive. Try to turn it on. If the machine tries to boot up but gives you the message that there is not a bootable disk found, then problem is most likely the hard drive. If you still get a black / blank screen, problem most likely the logic board.

Have you tried to reset SMC and NVRAM/PRAM?

Did you try booting it up with the battery disconnected and the power cord plugged in?
