Seagate External HD not recognized by any Operating System

I have a friends Seagate XHD (External Hard Drive) that is not read by any OS, I can hear the XHD spinning. I'm trying to get my MACBook Air to recognize this XHD so I can extract all docs and pics from it. I took the XHD out of its case and connected it to my computer via a Universal Drive Adapter but my computer still does not see it. Can anyone please give me some tips, in order to get the job done.

Thank you in advance,

Seems likely that the HD MBD is damaged, try some data recovery software on it.

The Seagate external drive SATA to USB bridge boards have cheap controllers that fail, the drive is almost always good, it's just the bridge board at fault, and when you take the Seagate enclosure out of the picture and use a better enclosure, can be used reliably after this is done to it
