Backlight not working normally but occasionally flashes on

Ok so I have an iPhone 3GS to fix. The backlight flashes on for a split second when I reboot then phone but apart from that it doesn't work. I also managed to get the backlight to stay on for a minute today but it eventually went out. The phone has had water in it previously as the top water damage indicator has been activated. Does anyone know what component is the culprit here?

Peter Hutchinson, since you are possibly dealing with a water damaged phone, I'd start by cleaning the phone's logic board. Use this guide to clean it. It was written for a 3G but still pertains to your phone. After that, re-evaluate your phone. It is possible that it is your LCD that needs to be replaced. If that does not resolve the issue, it may be time to check the backlight coil 6R8 or the backlight IC 109B. Check here for a location of the coil. Hope this helps, good luck.

Ok well I managed to get my hands on another working iPhone 3GS and try the water damaged phones LCD in it and it turns out that the LCD also doesn't work in the working phone. I'm ordering a new LCD for it and hoping that the 6R8 coil isn't dead too.
