On powerup, intermittently goes to restore screen

When working, everything seems to work, including sync and battery life. About half the time, however, the iPod goes to the restore screen on power up and I have to do a restore to proceed.

Thanks oldturkey03! The onboard diagnostics mode does not have a hard drive check in my model (someone else pointed this out).

Some of us actually use a Mac with their iPod and I was unable to find chkdsk in OS X. I tried Disk Utility, ran verify disk and found a bunch of errors. Ran repair disk, which took a long time, but it did repair the disk. It now verifies OK.

Good job, hope it fixes it. What's a Mac:-)

Bob Collins, Sounds like you are losing the firmware at times. It is possible that you are starting to run into a bad hard drive. I would try to place the iPod in disk mode and run a chkdsk on it. The other thing you could try, is to place the iPod in diagnostic mode and see if the drive checks okay. Start with that and see what you get. Hope this helps, good luck.
