Purchase only one chip from logic board

Hi.

I have two MacBooks (namely MB466 and MB990), both died of spill, and the problematic part in each of them is NVidia's MCP79MXT-B3 chip, which requires replacement.

So is it possible to purchase only this chip from you?

Thanks

Hi! I don't work for iFixit, but I can say that no, the chips themselves are not available individually, and they are generally purchased as part of a new logic board. There may be specialty outlets which offer the raw chip, but I haven't heard of any, and even if they were available, replacement of that chip requires expensive equipment and technical expertise.

I'm curious, how do you know that the video chips are specifically the problem? Have you tried connecting the laptops to an external display? There is a common video chip flaw with many Pros, and Apple will often swap the logic board free of charge if this is the case, so if by chance there was not a liquid spill (as Apple absolutely won't cover a liquid-damaged machine) and the machines do have the GPU flaw, it's worth taking them into an Apple store to see if they are covered.

Hi.

Well, that was a spill. Also I live far away from US in a small city and we don't have an Apple Store or something here. There is a company which is Apple's authorized repair workshop (or something, English is not my native and I can't find correct word for this), but Apple's policy is clear in this case - $1000 for a new logic board or something around $500 with broken one sent to them which equals a working one ordered on ebay.

I am not a technitian myself, but I can tell that there is a short circuit found in this chip, and everything else responds to testing fine. That tech is a quite skilled one and he has all the equipment needed.

I understand that those chips are not sold individually, but the hope was on broken board with this one working. For now I can't find anything like this on ebay. Probably I will have to order a whole new logic board, but my "greed frog" tells me not to hurry :(

mcp79xt has very small resistance via videocore(2-3ohms). sometimes it can be viewed via multimeter as the short circuit.
