iMac G4 17" 1.25 GHz Model M9168LLA PowerMac 6,1 introduced in 2003.

iMac G4 1.25 GHz: chime and fan, but no video, USB devices unresponsiv

Machine: iMac G4 (flat panel), 1.25 GHz, 17"
Changes made:

  • Opened the case, replaced the hard drive with an SSD (IDE to Sata, Sata to mSata)
  • Installed 1 GB RAM, but PC3200 instead of PC2700
  • Replaced the clock battery

Sequence:

  1. After reassembly the iMac booted normally.
  2. When starting the installer I got an "invalid memory" error. I removed the new RAM and reinstalled the original module.
  3. I then tried a PRAM reset (Cmd-Opt-P-R). There was no second chime, but the iMac continued to boot normally.
  4. During startup with Option held (startup disk picker), the display went off after about 20 seconds.
  5. Since then the display stays black at power-on.

Current state:

  • The chime plays and the fan spins up.
  • No video. With a flashlight in a dark room I cannot see a faint image either.
  • USB devices (mouse and keyboard) receive power but do not respond.

Already tried:

  • PMU reset (done once)
  • Removed the battery and booted without it: no change
  • SSD and optical drive disconnected from the logic board: no change
  • Original RAM reinstalled (it worked before)

Cannot test: External monitor (I only have Thunderbolt and 4K HDMI displays).

Question: Has anyone seen this? Possible causes I have read about include the video cable or connectors, a hung PMU state, or a logic board fault. Are there other tests I can do without an external monitor?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

What happens when you put back the original HDD back in if it was working?

by

@danj I have disconnected the optical and storage drive.

Do you have a bootable OS9 or OS8 external drive either via USB or FireWire? Does it boot up with either one?

by

no, unfortunately not.

I experimented with the ram.

I disconnected all the ram sticks. after the power on/fan starting a short warning sound comes.

after reinstalling just one ram stick in the user upgradable port, it goes back to the problem of not turn on the screen and no input control thru the usb ports....

maybe I killed the internal ram by installing a invalide memory stick?

@paulusproteinum - Without a bootable drive present the system will get to the Bong, but will timeout with no workable drive.

You really need to put the hopefully working HDD back in. This series requires a IDE/ATA or more commonly called a PATA drive. Trying to fit in a newer SATA drive likely won't work as they are mostly too fast for this system at best you could try an older SATA I (1.5 Gbps) drive the newer SATA II (3.0 Gbps) or III (6.0 Gbps) won't cut it.

Okay, I just reinstalled the hdd and replugged it as well as the optical drive to the motherboard.

The problem stays the same. After the bong the screen stays black.....

@paulusproteinum - That's not good 😫

Does the screen glow in a darkened room or what do you see if you place a lit flashlight against the screen to offer some light do you see the faint image of the desktop icons?

I'm thinking either you have a power issue to the LCD's back light or the displays data cable is not connected up or damaged.

The screen does not glow in a dark room.

The thing is, that neither the usb ports seem to be working.

I tried to eject the dvd drive by pressing left mouse click right after powering on. normally it triggers the dvd ejection...

after the bong the system seems to be crashing...

@paulusproteinum - Check your connections! Of what you disconnected or changed, I can't see this being a crash, I can see a bad connection or something got damaged.

by

Alright, I will check all the connections later!
