Testing screens for quality before use

Sorry this may seem like an extremely newbie question, but to test if the screen actually works and isn't faulty before doing the whole repair, can I just plug the lcd/digtisers into the connectors with just the back open and turn it on to see if it works?

and also the same for ipod touch 4th gen?

YES you can just test the lcd and touch before dismantle the whole screen or iphone. just remove the back panel or black shield which covering the connecters on the logic board. plug the lcd and digitizer and check that.
