on switching on, there is a grinding and clicking noise from the hard drive on the i pod. the 5 stage recovery is not sucsesful and the sad i pod face keeps coming up

stewcum65, by the symptoms and the noise you are describing, it sounds like your hard drive has failed. It is somewhat becoming more common, probably because of the age of the drives. The sound itself is most likely bad heads and/or bad bearings in the drive. The drives are almost impossible to fix, unless one has a clean room. Follow these guides to repair your iPod. oldturkey..just to hijack this answer and ask a question but do you know of any guides for repairing hard drives. I've got 3 I'd like to see if I can rejuvinate.. :-)
