orange stripes by video card!

Good morning.

From about 4 years I have an iMac 20 "2.66 Ghz. For almost 6 months I have a very serious problem. On the monitor there are orange stripes. The problem is not the monitor because the lines are moving moving the windows. The problem is not fixed ... sometimes not even, sometimes appear; with different intensities.

It almost seems that there is an intermittent contact, sometimes flashing. I thought the problem was due to dust and thermal paste. Following your wonderful guides so I removed the video card and I put the thermal paste. But the problem is not solved!

What can I do? What could be the problem? Help me please I'm desperate!

Options

Connect to and external monitor - if the problem persists it is the video card, if it goes away it is probably the display. This is a well known/documented issue. If the external monitor works, you could use that as a work around. You'll have to decide if you want to put the money in repairing a 5 (soon to be 6) year old machine or towards purchase of a replacement.
