How can I reinstall the operating system?

I have had the hard drive replaced. Now I cannot get the OS to install on this computer. It goes through the process of installing, and then gives me a message that "there was a problem installing the software. There is still no system on my laptop. What else could be the problem. All I get is a question mark.

Hi! I usually get that error when I am using duplicated media. iBook optical drives unfortunately are very touchy and often don't work well with burned media. Regardless of whether you have original/burned media, you might want to try cleaning it, because this error can often just be the result of smudges. if that doesn't help, you can put the media in a newer external optical drive, and load the OS from that, or connect the iBook to another Mac via Firewire, and then put that Mac in target mode and load the OS from the remote Mac's optical drive.
