What does the little spring on rear camera do?

There's a little tiny spring on the right hand screen where the rear camera is, taking the screen off I accidentally bent that and I realized none of my screens were working properly after that. I bought many different screens to try and fit onto the iPod, however none of them worked. Something tells me this little spring at the right hand corner near the camera is the problem does anyone know what it is? And what it does?
