Could lack of video be a GPU issue?

Hi! I'm considering buying a 2.4GHZ Aluminum 15" Pro sight-unseen. The seller says that the screen is black, but the machine is working, and adjusting the screen into a particular position causes the screen to light up, but that it is very sensitive, and moving it out of that position causes it to go black again.

My question is, what is the probability that this machine has the GPU issue? My guess is that it is very unlikely, and that the issue is probably related to the inverter cable getting crimped. Obviously it would be preferable to test this machine with an external display, but that is not going to be possible. Are there any other simple tests I can ask him to perform? I'm going to have him try the flashlight test to see if there is an image when the backlight is out, but I'm wondering if there's anything else I'm missing.

Thanks!

I agree with you. Seems to be an inverter circuitry issue. The flashlight test will give you the answer. Pretty sure it's a bad inverter cable.

Ask the owner to check with a flashlight for a image, or bring one when you go to inspect the system. If you don't see one, it's either a problem with the internal LCD or a GPU fault. In most cases, it's because of a failed GPU, especially if it has the 8600M GT.

It may not even hurt to bring a small disposable monitor with you, especially if you have the cables and can power it.

Your spelling is better. Punctuation would make this statement understandable. I had to read it four times to understand what you meant. -vote till corrected. Here's a link for you: http://www.grammarbook.com/english_rules...
