The coffee is going straight into the waste container as opposed to coming out through the spout. It appears that the spout is not dropping down into the correct position. How do you ensure that the spout does drop in the correct position when the mechanism starts?

This device is complicated and prone to malfunctions. The brew group itself is probably leaking, which makes it difficult to fix. If you're lucky, it's just the internal coffee spout. Have you tried fixing it?

It is a common problem that the guiding pins of the rocker arm break.
But it can easily be fixed: Open the machine, take out the rocker arm and spout. Cut a toothpick (or similar) to appropriate length and glue it to the spout in order to it provides the function of the guiding pins for the rocker arm. Re-insert it into machine and test. Done :-)
