Released in October of 2020, the Dell XPS 13 9310 is physically very similar to previous models but has optional upgrades for graphics and the processor. This device does not cover the 2-in-1 model.

replacing cracked front glass on screen

Due to a recent drop, although the display is fine, there is a fine crack and small shattered corner on just the glass. I'm wondering if that can be replaced without replacing the entire screen and outer case.

 Thanks for any pointers.

I've checked my usual sources and so far haven't had any luck finding any vendors selling just the front glass; the closest I came was a complete LCD assembly that includes the front glass, but there's going to be a difference depending on whether yours is a touch screen or not, and there are at least two or three different resolution variations available as well.

Thanks, Jerry. It is the touch screen model (which I mistakenly had thought I could use a pen on). I wasn't aware there is more than one resolution, but I'm pretty sure it's the 1920 x 1200 because I got it after returning a higher res model that caused all kinds of compatibility issues.

I wonder if I could also replace it with a non-touch screen model if there's a significant price difference or availability of the parts. I don't actually use the function much. Any idea?

I may just continue to use it and ignore the barely visible crack. But if it was an easy repair (which it seems to be) with a fairly reasonably priced part, I might do it anyway.

Thanks again.

@greenbergman You might have to do some homework to find out if the touch and non-touch screens are compatible. On one Reddit thread one guy mentioned that they have different connectors; 30 pin vs. 40 pin and so wouldn't be compatible unless you can replace the LCD cable as well.

You might also look on the back side of the LCD; most laptop manufacturers use off-the-shelf screens so you can probably find the manufacturer and model number of the LCD itself and use that to do a further search for parts. This page is worth a read.

My Dell XPS 13 9310 touch screen is broken. Can I replace it with a non-touch screen monitor to save money? : r/computerrepair

Thanks so much, Jerry. I appreciate the legwork. From that Reddit, it sounds like the touch ability is in the form of a glass cover on the nontouch screen, which would explain why my screen is fine in spite of the damage - and I hadn't tested it 'til now, but I think the touch capability no longer works.

"3. FullHD touch. Same matrix as in non-touch but covered with touch glass. Glossy. But with touch. Same battery life. By design more expensive but can be cheaper for sale - people like me who hate glossy can sell this when "upgraded" to matte."

Despite the glass being an overlay, it sounds like I can't replace that separately from the screen, which is unfortunate.

BTW, this one (https://www.newegg.com/p/3AD-0004-00EN1) seems to be significantly less expensive than others I've found. Do you see any reason why?

by

@greenbergman I can't say why this one is cheaper; could be they're just trying to get rid of stock, but Newegg is a reputable dealer and it is a genuine Dell screen. As long as it's the right one for your laptop and the price appeals to you, it would be a good choice.

But yeah, everything I see says you're not going to be able to replace the digitizer separately from the LCD.

Thanks (yet again). I've bought from NewEgg in the past - they used to be more specifically about computers. But I was just suspicious that perhaps this one was cheaper because it was not the right one.

Thank you for all your help. It was above and beyond.
