Intermittent charging issue on Lenovo V15-ADA with clicking sound

I have a Lenovo V15-ADA laptop and I’m experiencing an intermittent charging problem.

When the laptop is powered off, it charges normally without any issue. However, when I turn it on and start using it, the charging becomes unstable. The charger connects and disconnects repeatedly.

I also hear a clicking or “tick-tack” sound near the charging port when this happens.

Another important detail: when the battery is at 100% and I plug in the charger while using the laptop, the problem appears at first (charging unstable), but after some time it becomes stable again.

I have tried:

- Unplugging and re-plugging the charger multiple times

- Changing the position of the cable

The issue persists.

I suspect it might be a problem with the charging port (DC jack) or internal connection, but I would like confirmation.

What could be the exact cause and the best solution?

@kamalait sure, could be the DC-In jack, but it could also be the charging circuitry on your laptop as well as the battery itself. It could also be the AC adapter itself. Try a different one if you have access to it.

You mentioned that it becomes unstable once you try to charge it when the laptop is turned on. That would make me check the battery and charging circuitry first. Your DC-In jack does not care if your laptop is on or off. If it is flaky its flaky, no matter what state your laptop is in.

To determine if the issue is on your circuitry, we would need to know what exact number your motherboard is. It could be a NM-D151 but we will need to know for sure. If it is then use the NM D151 REV 1 0 PDF and check page 39 for the charging circuitry. To work on your laptop itself, use the Lenovo V14 And V15 Hardware Maintenance Manual

Now, if all of that sounds a bit confusing, you can always post a couple of well focused pictures of your motherboard with your question. Maybe one of us can find/see things that might be a more obvious issue. Adding images to an existing question
