Touchscreen unresponsive from time to time

Hello,

Sometimes my touchscreen is unresponsive while using the phone. When it happens, I have to lock it and unlock it. Sometimes, when locked, the touchscreen doesn't answer too. So I have to leave the phone alone for a few minutes and try again later.

I have tried:

  • Restarting the phone with Home+Power buttons (10s)
  • Restoring the phone

Others symptoms:

  • I have read that the touchscreen connector could be lightly disconnected. But this problem happens either I use the phone in my hand or placed on a table.
  • I made some tests using the calculator app. When the problem occurs, the gyroscope still works since I can flip the phone and use the calc in portrait/landscape mode.
  • All the buttons (volume, power, home, even handfree kit) works too

Of course, the phone fell down a few times but nothing harmful.

How can I test either it's an iOS or hardware issue ?

Looks like you got a dud touch-screen on your unit. There's nothing you'll be able to do to get it working without voiding the warranty on the unit.

My advice is to take it back to the place of purchase for an instant swap over. Don't let them take it into a 'repair' process, as you are entitled to an instant swap over within the first 10 days from your invoiced date.

Hope this helps

I think my warranty period is over.

I bought the phone 18 months ago. This problem first occured after 1 year and then reappears randomly for a few days.

I don't know if I should procede to a screen replacement now or wait and run some more tests (SW solutions) ?

Same here. Apple wanted to charge me 320 dollars for a swap sawing it was an issue with a bent frame (the frame is straight as an arrow!). The local cbr shop tried a mil reflow which cured the phone for three hours. This is just a ridiculous hardware or design issue. Does anybody has a fix?

Thanks

Did you ever get this worked out?

Have you checked to make sure you have at least 10% free storage space on your device? Clear out the multitasker as well. New iOS updates have been known to give legacy devices problems.

Apple says that multitasking doesn't affect performance, I beg to differ. All of my iDevices are Jailbroken and when I clear the Multitask bar, I can watch my available memory jump up.

A dud screen will have consistent dead spots. Usually the same spot in every app and screen. If it is just taking a year(iphone time) to respond (real time is like 60 seconds), then it's most likely software related. Have you restored and setup as a new device? Do not restore from backup as maybe your backup is corrupt. If the problem persists, there might be a bigger problem with your logic board. Doubt it though.

I know it's been a year since you've been here but I came across this looking for links for a customer of mine with the same issue.

Really just posting some info and curious I you got it worked out or just bought a new device.

After a call to my mobile network operator, it appeared that my warranty was still valid !!

The diagnostic of the problem was just stating : touchscreen freezes randomly.

Solution given by support: replacement with a new iPhone 4.

In conclusion, the origin of the problem has not been found out.

My iPhone was not jail broken and I proceeded to full restoration without use of any backup many times and the problem still occurred.

I don't think it was a memory problem and the freeze was not on certain spots but on the whole screen. Sometimes I could not cut the communication while on call !

As for my new iPhone 4, I did not encounter any problems. I am running the latest iOS version and the phone is still not jail broken.

I hope you will find a solution to your problem.

I had similar touch screen freeze-ups and tried the above fixes without success. To fix it I had to back up my iPhone to my computer via iTunes, then turn off Settings/iCloud/FindMyPhone, then Settings/General/Reset/Erase All Content and Settings. Then during iPhone setup, I chose to Restore from iTunes Backup (or something to that effect). Now it works like new again!

if a reflow helped the problem for 3 hours i suggest taking a heat gun and heating the rear glass untill you are certain the internal workings of the phone are red hot. this will melt the salter inside your phone and hopefully fix your problem

after i updated my Iphone 5 ios 10.1.1 5 days ago the screen began acting weird (though i don't know if the update is the problem) also i dropped it for maybe 6 weeks ago it will be responsive for about 5 seconds and sometimes it will zoom in and when i zoom out it is so hard the picture will either go up or down and sometimes when i’m sliding left or right it is sliding but rather slow and it is normal to the top right screen part under the front cam to be warm? i just noticed it last night
