When I plug in battery to 5th gen iPod, sounds like it's shorting.

Found an old iPod 5th gen. When I tried to replace the battery, the screen would flicker and make a somewhat of a sizzle / crackle sound and then eventually just stay white and I would notice the whole bottom portion of the logic board getting intensely hot. Any ideas what would be causing this? The board looks very clean, I can't seem to see anything that stands out that would be causing a short.

@wavesarewaves this series iPod had issues with the brown battery connector tearing of the logic board. Take a really good look at it and see if you can identify any torn traces etc. Let us know what you find out.

I don't see anything that stands out. What I did notice is that the shorting (sizzling, flicking and all that) happens only when the back plate is connected via the ribbon. When I unplug the backplate, the shorting sounds stop.

@wavesarewaves try to connect the battery without placing the back cover. See if that makes a difference.
