LCD distorts when pressed, LCD cable folded?

Dear members of iFixit,

I'm repairing iPhones for a year or so, and always found solutions for any problems I encountered on iFixit. Now however I have two questions I didn't really find any answers to.

- Last week I replaced two LCD assembly's for the iPhone 4, but both times the LCD wasn't working properly. All around the screen the iPhone's LCD was discolored. I added a picture of this below. At first I assumed the LCD was faulty, but when I contacted my supplier, he said it was probably the LCD cable. When I checked, the small ribbons on both the faulty LCD were indeed folded a little. I added a picture of this as well.

Do you guys have any tips on how to prevent this from happening? My supplier told me "just to be more careful", but I always try to attach the connectors as gently as possible.

- My second question is, sometimes with some LCD's I replace, they distort when you press a little on the screen. Mainly below the screen when you press the black area, so not on the actual LCD itself, it tends to distort. I even had it one time when the home button was pressed, the screen distorted. Does this also have anything to do with the way the screen is installed?

Thanks a lot in advance,

Kind regards,

Jip Krens

Regarding the cables, you have to be very careful. When inserted they are the same length, so make sure you have them both at same length before completely snapping down front screen, you do not want to pinch the Digitizer Cable. The LCD Cable can carefully be pre-bent over a small screwdriver shaft at the dotted-hash marks. The Cable that is usually pinched is the Digitizer Cable, so if this is pinched it will not effect LCD function, it will effect Touch. Most often I have seen LCD abnormalities when the Front Glass is of poor quality and thicker than Apples front glass, this thick screen puts pressure on the LCD behind it causing image artifacts, most often accentuated by finger when touching screen.

Hi Brad,

Thanks for your reply. I will try the trick with the screwdriver.

Regarding the screen being to thick, can it be a solution to remove the glue from the frame?

Thanks a lot,

Make sure that you have the ribbon cable guard on the top of the logic board in place. It is the small black piece that fits on the top of the logic board and keeps the ribbon cables from bending. Most people ignore this when it comes of but it actually is very important in keeping the ribbon cables from getting damaged. You should also make sure that the ribbon cable is properly routed through the hole in the frame because this can also cause issues. Also your problem with spots on the LCD when pressure is applied could be cause by the screws. Sometimes the scores can be tightened so much that they put pressure on the thin metal frame, therefore putting pressure on the back of the LCD panel. I would check to make sure that all the screws are in the right places and that they are not over tightened. This problem can also be caused by a long screw where a short screw should have been. See if you have any of these problems then get back and tell us what you found.

hope this Helps

Hi Owen,

I do always make sure the rubber guard is present, however untightening the screws could definetly be a solution! I always screw them as tight as possible, thinking this was the way to go.

Is it also an idea to remove the original glue from the frame?

I will try tomorrow and let you guys know the results.

Thanks a lot,
