Open lid and screen flashes on, then immediately goes black. Display via DVI works fine. External display blanks when I close the cover. I suspect a bad cable or connector since the system is fully operable except for the display .
Advice please on potential fix and potential replacement parts and repair procedure please?

You could have a damaged inverter, cable or bad LCD connection. Since an external monitor works you have ruled out the graphics chip and the logic board. Inverter boards and cables are not expensive or hard to replace DIY.
