iPhone 3G that seems to have liquid damage but indicators still white?

Bought an Iphone 3g to repair. Most of the screws have rust on them. Usually rust comes from water or moisture contact. However, the water damage indicators are still white. The dock connector has rust, what looks like corrosion, and/or mold. I was going to replace the battery and the dock/charger port. Is there anything else you think I need to replace? The phone doesn't hold a charge or turn on at all. White powdery stuff on some parts inside.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Ok so I finally received the dock connector for the phone and replaced it. The new battery is still on the way. But, now the phone turns on after I replaced the dock connector port. Only thing is when I connected an LCD to it from another iphone 3g the screen was white and had weird lines going through it. The things is, this LCD when I connect it to its original Iphone 3g it is fine.

Matthieu, who knows what happened to the indicators. It is possible that the original indicators were fraudulently replaced. Happens all the time, and it is done by cheats. Anyhow, it does sound like a good project to try to resurrect. The white powdery stuff is most likely corrosion. I would start off by cleaning the phone using this guide. After that I most certainly would replace the battery and the molded dock connector. Then re-evaluate for any residual damage. I am sure you have seen the great guides on here to help you with this. Good luck.

Thanks! This is a project/hobby I wanted to get into. This is my first task/phone. (I have repaired other devices, especially computer before) However, since I am new to this seen I thought I would ask the knowledgeable people of the ifixit community. Gotta learn through experience.

Most people say if it has liquid damage and doesn't receive a charge or respond to a charger, you should replace the battery and dock connect/charger port. After that I don't have the proper screwdriver to grip the last two screw to completely remove the motherboard/logic board(which I've ordered). The hold button area has corrosion. The "sleep/wake" button is jammed down into the frame. After that most of the ports/connector look okay. I cleaned them off a little bit but, none had corrosion.

ordered the parts and now in waiting mode.

A good cleaning should show what is going on. Give it a try, do not get frustrated and if the screws are to rusted, you may have to invest in one of these :)

What would you suggest to try to get those rusted screws out? When I try to unscrew them chunks come off.

Something like this Precision Screw Extractor Set should work. Definitely a must if you are going to do any more repairs.
