Why won't my mac power on?

I bought this macbook pro from my friend knowing that there were problems with it. The comuputer it's self turns on but the screen remains black. I can hear the innerds of the machine working but the screen remains black. I have gotten the mac to work a few times already but the majority of the time it doesn't want to power up the screen or volume. I have not tried an external monitor yet which I plan to try but incase that doesn't work does anyone have any ideas?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Marcus - Looking at the screen can you see a faint image of your desktop when you start your system up? If you do try adjusting the brightness control bring it all the way down and slowly raise it did did the display light up at all?

I did a PRAM reset and the only thing that changed was the volume. The mac start up chime plays now but the screen still remains black.

If you do see your desktop and are able to get some illumination try reseting the SMC - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewl...

It also happened to me last night. I thought it was out battery since my sister borrowed it. But it was charged. Whenever i turned it on, i can hear the chiming sounds as it starts up. But the monitor remained black. I tried adjusting the brightness but it does not work. Unlike the brightness button for the keyboar as well as the volume button. What might caused it?
