The Sony Playstation 2 SCPH-790xx is the fourth revision of the Playstation2 slimline model.

I need some help with my PS2 Slim ribbon cable port.

Hello everyone!

Recently, I've been trying to do a small maintenance work on my PS2 Slim SCHP 79003 (it had a dead clockwork battery and it was a bit dusty). After i opened the case of the console i started unscrewing and unplugging the CD drive in order to clean the whole thing and all went well until i realize that the ribbon cable port (the one with a clip) got broken. Like, on the right of the beige part got it's corner ripped and on the left the clip's leg got stuck in the beige part, meaning that i can't connect the ribbon cable without having the %#*@ clip flying around. After I've put everything back together, I wanted to try a game and see if the drive would work, only to be met by a heavy grinding sound. My first theory was that it didn't have lube on the moving parts but when i was moving the laser it didn't seem like it was an issue, plus it only made this sound after the cleaning so I suppose it should be something related to the port.

And so I want to ask y'all some questions in order to fix this issue i have:

  1. Can I fix it without having to buy another console? It has been in my home for over 15 years and I really want to hold onto it, especially if i want to finally build a collection of older games to have them physically.
  2. Is it easy to fix or do I have to learn how to solder or do some complicated thing? I hope it can be easy to fix but i have a feeling that I would have to do more in order to have it fixed properly. Plus idk anyone in my area able to do repair jobs like this so I would rather try and do it myself before starting to search and gather money to repair it.

Here's a picture of the port highlighted in case there's any confusion. Taken from here.

Thanks in advance and I hope i can find an easier solution for this problem.

Hi!

If the clip broke off, you should replace the port. Replacing that port is difficult, especially when it’s your first time soldering.

I recommend to check with a local repair shop. Or train yourself (you can only learn by actually doing it) with a test board and not with the PS2 Slim board.

Grinding sound can be caused by multiple issues here. Even if the little white plastic leaning againts the rail is gone, it can even cause that sound. Please check if all the parts are there..

Replacing the port is what need to be done anyway, would do this first.

Sorry for the bad news.

Thanks man. I hoped for that maybe there would be some easier solution out there that i don't know about but it's alright (:

One other question tho, where can i find a replacement piece like this online? Preferably the lone piece so i don't end up with another broken PS2. Or at least how to search for it on the internet.

Hi!

They are hard to find indeed. You could search for like: PS2 Slim Laser socket. But not sure if you can find it that way. Is there any chance to buy a broken (donor) motherboard and get the port from there? That will be easier I think!

@dan0 i'll try to search for a broken PS2 Slim in my country's marketplaces and such but i usually find working models or just other accessories when searching for one. Still tho, thanks for trying helping me, it means a lot especially since I haven't seen too many people with this kind of problem online.

My pleasure! Happy to help :). It's hard to find something like that yes :(... Best bet would be Ebay, I think... Sorry.
