2012, 21.5 Mac will not log into Apple account

My Mac will power up, and my password will get me logged on. However, my Apple ID which works for my iPad and iPhone will not allow me to log into my account. I have been told by several people that it is a date/time issue that is caused by a dead lithium button battery on the back of the board. I am not concerned with disassembling the machine to change a $3.00 battery if that is the problem. I am just checking to see if this sounds like a reasonable solution for the problem.

Options

First make sure the outlet you are plugged into is powered and not turned off as once you do the setting will get lost! If you have a UPS that will help.

Reset your date and time so it's correct year, month & date. See if that fixes things.
