My MacBook Pro USB doesn't work anymore

Hi guys,

recently I, like many others in the world, made a terrible mistake and spilled water on my laptop. Similar to others, Apple wanted to charge me $1.3k for replacement of the logic board, which is simply out of my budget at this time.

Luckily my laptop still turns on, but unfortunately the USB slots do not work anymore. I really want to back my data up on an external harddrive, but the USB slots on my macbook right now simply can't power up anything.

I was wondering if there are any solutions to fix this? Otherwise, do you know any alternative ways to get USB on an macbook? I know the thunderbolt and possibly the firewire slots are still functional.

Thank you

Chosen Solution

Yes, that's a pricey logic board and you may also have to replace the top case.

I'd ask Apple for a complete written repair estimate (including the uppercase and magSafe board and take that to my insurance agent. Your hard drive data is most likely just fine, and be accessed via a universal adapter or external enclosure. Usually you'll have a $500 deductible on a homeowner or tenant policy.

thanks :) but even with $500 deductible it'd still be $800, i'd rather purchase a new laptop. Right now it sucks that the usbs are totally useless. Is it possible to find a solution, such as a firewire powered usb port?

additionally when i first took the laptop to the apple store, the guys told me there wasn't any water damage. Then they found out about it when they sent it to the deport. Would this information somehow benefit me ?

you may need to update your usb drivers, or the machines usb ports themselves.
