Why does this N3DS get hot instead of charging?

As the title, this morning my wife checked her N3DS XL and instead of charging overnight like usual, it was flashing red as though the battery was nearly dead, and when she picked it up the unit was hot to the touch. We unplugged the unit, hard-powered it off, and set it in a safe place in case the battery explodes or something.

Is this a "just replace the battery" thing or a "solder on a new capacitor" thing?

@molligru for now you want to start off with a new battery. It is common for a failed battery to heat up, so start with that.. If nothing else, it will give you a known-well starting point should further troubleshooting become necessary.
