your transmission is gone and is leaking into your engine the black smoke is burning transmission fluid.

Ryan, can you explain how that works? I've been wrenching on cars for 50 years and have yet to see a transmission leaking fluid into the engine. I don't know of any path where transmission fluid could get into the combustion chamber of the engine, so please enlighten me.

if the transmission is cool via the radiator on an internal coil a poor connection or solder joint can cause this leak. My 1990 chevy pick up had this very issue which caused it to over heat and lock up. Unfortunately for me my leak was located in the radiator, depending on the model the car can also have a oil cooling route that would lead to the same issue. This is most common in European cars my VW ran that system of oil/transmission cooling done via the same housing a poor designee. I discovered this when my internal heater block cracked and I found in car filled with a mixture of coolant and transmission fluid.

@ryanjohnst63184 "filled with a mixture of coolant and transmission fluid" I understand a leaking transmission cooler can cause a mixing of transmission fluid with engine coolant. Hut how would that cause "black smoke only when changing gears"? With that theory you are burning the coolant in the combustion chambers but that would happen at all times not just when changing the gears.

@abdoziton anytime you are seeing smoke out of your exhaust, use the color as a first step diagnostic tool. Generally, white smoke means coolant is leaking, blue means you’re burning oil, and gray is usually a combination of both fuel and oil. Since you are seeing black smoke, it means your engine is running "rich". Basically, it's getting way too much fuel and not enough air.

The reason this is happening specifically when you shift gears is because of the sudden change in engine load. When you change gears and step back on the gas, your engine suddenly needs a massive gulp of air to keep up with the new RPM. If for example your air filter is clogged, or if sensors like the MAF (Mass Air Flow) or O2 sensors aren't reading the airflow correctly, the engine can't balance the mixture fast enough. It ends up dumping too much fuel into the cylinders. That excess, unburned fuel comes out as a cloud of black smoke until the system stabilizes.

To narrow this down, I'd suggest you get your Kia's OBDII scanned. Check for error codes that point to a faulty sensor or a sticking fuel injector.
