What is this silver sponge type thing?
@danj Any ideas what purpose this silver spongy type thing is for?
While we're at it, I am also replacing a rubber screen gasket, do we need to stick this down and if so with what?
Is this a good question?

This is silvered carbon foam used as an EMI/RFI bridge. Here it is used to bond the cover glass (which is metal oxide coated) to the chassis to create a Faraday Cage which has two realms the inner-world and the outer-world. Preventing the noise of one to pollute the other! Here it's the lid space which is part of the main case space linking by the hinges as two inner spaces.

(There is no glass involved in this case as it will just touch the bezel surround on a MBA 11") Anyway, one is missing, do we really need this? I guess while I am at it, I can steal one from a spare display housing.... what about the gasket, I got it to fit, but I ned to stick down the bezel onto it, I guess a small 3-4mm screen tape in the corners to keep the shape as once the DS tape is exposed to put on the bezel if it moved I have to start all over LOL.... Wish I never started to do this....
@livfe - OK, this is the older model, still is doing the same job.
Just make sure the person who gets this system wears chain male🤣 so they don't get irradiated! Missing one likely won't be a big issue.
@danj I will transfer one over from the spare ..... regarding the rubber gasket.... tape it all the way round? Tedious task
