Replacing Keyboard - How necessary is replacing the adhesive and tape?

I am replacing my keyboard and successfully removed the nonfunctioning keyboard, following this guide: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen Keyboard Replacement

During the process, I removed tape (step 25) and broke the adhesive holding the keyboard in place (step 27).

How necessary is it to replace the adhesive and tape? Where would I find the proper adhesive and tape?

Hi @fredlien86

The tape is necessary as it will insulate the metal screwheads in case they touch anything on the motherboard which may cause electrical problems, when downward pressure is applied to the keyboard by the user,

The adhesive will help to keep the keyboard secured to the top cover.

Suggest that you use a suitable width, yellow Kapton tape to cover the screwheads and a suitable width Tesa 61395 adhesive tape for the keyboard.

The manufacturer deemed that it was necessary to use the tape and the adhesive and usually they don't spend more than they have to when making a product.

Thanks!

There's still some adhesive residue on the laptop where the keyboard pulled away. Should I try and remove that before applying adhesive tape? Is there a recommended method for doing so?

It is better to completely remove any adhesive residue and then use the Tesa tape to secure the keyboard to the laptop.

Doing this will ensure a more effective and even seal all round and not one that is uneven

Apply a Q-Tip lightly dampened with Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available from electronics parts stores) to the residual adhesive to soften it and then gently scrape it away.
