The check engine light is on telling you that there's a problem with the engine that needs your attention.

It will be gone once you find and fix the problem that has caused it to come on

The easiest way to find out what the problem is, is to get the OBDII port in the vehicle scanned with an appropriate scantool to see what DTC code (Diagnostic Troubleshooting Code) has been stored. The code tells you what the problem is.

If you're in the USA major auto parts retail stores e.g. AutoZone, PepBoys, O'Reilly Auto Parts etc, do this for free apparently.
